This chapter introduces the concepts of symmetric coloring and consistency
with color. Assuming the existence of seven border pattern types, it is
shown why there exist precisely twenty four types of two-colored border
patterns. Several examples stress the interplay between structural and
visual aspects of the various colorings. 'Symmetry plans' capture each
type's isometry structure in an abstract manner and are essential for
classification exercises.
