Bulletin of TICMI

Volume 2, 1998

I. Vekua Institute of Applied Mathematics

Founded in 1995 The Tbilisi International Centre of Mathematics and Informatics (TICMI) constantly expands its activitis for the promotion of the scientific intercourse. However, many readers of Bulletin of TICMI have a scanty information about The Ilya Vekua Institute of Applied Mathematics (VIAM) of The Tbilisi Ivane Javakhishvili State University, the whereabouts of TICMI.

VIAM was founded in 1968, on the basis of the Laboratory of electronic computers which existed at The Chair of Approximate Analysis and Computing Technique of The Department of Mechanics and Mathematics of The Tbilisi State University. In 1978 it was named after its founder and first director Academician Ilya Vekua.

The main directions of VIAM’s activities were determined by Ilya Vekua as following:

the investigation of multi-dimensional integral and differential equations and development of methods of their solutions for the problems of shell theory, theory of elasticity, meteorology, transfer theory, etc;

the investigation of probability theory, mathematical statistics and their applications to problems of dynamic programming, mass service and processing of experimental data (the investigations continued till 1971);

development of problems of mathematical economics and their applications to the solution of problems of programming and control in different fields of national economy (the investigations continued till 1971);

theoretical investigation and development of numerical methods for some problems of optimal control;

development of theoretical and applied problems of programming, including the formation of systems of algorithms and programs to solve the typical problems on the computer;

development and application of methods of applied mathematics and computer techniques in organising the teaching process at higher schools.

For thirty years VIAM has been the main scientific - educational base of The Tbilisi State University in applied mathematics and informatics. Since the very first days of its foundation VIAM has been establishing scientific contacts (on basis of bilateral and multilateral agreements) mathematical departaments of Lomonosov State University of Moscow, Novosibirsk State University, Kiev State University, Friedrich Shiller University of Iena, Ian Amos Komensky University of Bratislava, Lodz University, Martin Luther University of Halle, University of Rome "La Sapienza", as well as with V. Steclov Mathematical Institute of Moscow, M. Keldish Applied Mathematics Institute of Moscow, I. Curchatov Atomic Energy Institute of Moscow, INRIA.

Since 1992 The Specialized Council of Tbilisi State University has been acting at VIAM, conferring scientific degrees and titles in different field of mathematics.

Since 1997 The State Institute of Qualification Improvement and Training of the Ministry of Education of Georgia has been acting at VIAM.

VIAM has the publications:

"Proceedings of I. Vekua Institute of Applied Mathematics" (published since 1969);

"Seminar of I. Vekua Institute of Applied Mathematics" (published since 1969);

"Reports of Enlarged Sesion of Seminar of I. Vekua Institute of Applied Mathematics" (published since 1985);

"Applied Mathematics and Informatics" (published since 1996).

There are 193 members at VIAM at present, 25 doctors of science (full professors) and 43 candidates of sciences (doctors) among them. They are acting in the following thirteen departments: Theory of elasticity, Shell theory, Mathematical physics, Mathematical logic and methodology, Numerical methods, Projective methods, Applied works, Complex analysis and its applications, Partial differential equations, Mathematical programming and control systems, Discrete mathematics, Software, Hardware.

There is the Scientific Council, acting at VIAM.

Since 1985 VIAM is directed by Professor, Dr. David Gordeziani. There are two deputy directors at VIAM - Professor, Dr. George Jaiani and Dr. Ilya Tavkhelidze. The governing body of VIAM will in every possible way contribute to TICMI’s success in its activity.
