About the Nexus 2004 Logo

The Nexus 2004 logo was designed by artist Mark A. Reynolds, of Mill Valley, California. He says about the work:

Kim Williams and I have worked together on the logos for the last two Nexus conferences. (The last one, for the Nexus 2002 conference in Óbidos, shows Brunelleschi's Duomo, with a geometric interpretation.) We decided that each conference would have its own logo, all being square in perimeter, and would come to represent each particular conference. For the one to be held in Mexico City, I built the drawing and design around Landa's Relaciones and the Troano Codex, which some scholars believe substantiates the Atlantis legends. In any case, I found the images fertile ground for the square root of two ratio, and developed my gridwork around this relationship.

Mr. Reynolds is a visual artist who works primarily in the media of drawing, watercolor, pastel, printmaking and mixed media. He received his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Art and Art Education from Towson University in Maryland. He was awarded the Andelot Fellowship to do post-graduate work in drawing and printmaking at the University of Delaware. He teaches sacred geometry, linear perspective, and drawing to both graduate and undergraduate students at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco, California, where he was voted Outstanding Educator of the Year by the students in 1992. Additionally, he is a geometer and his specialties in this field include geometric analyses of architecture, paintings and design. For the past decade, Mr. Reynolds has been at work on an extensive body of drawings, paintings and prints that incorporate and explore the ancient science of sacred, or contemplative, geometry. His work is widely exhibited in both group and individual shows, especially in California. His work is in corporate, public and private collections. He is a member of the California Society of Printmakers (click on "Galleries," then click on the link for Mark Reynolds to see six of his prints and read his statement), the Los Angeles Printmaking Society and the Marin Arts Council. He has published, "A New Geometric Analysis of the Pazzi Chapel in Florence" in Nexus III: Architecture and Mathematics, and, "A Comparative Geometric Analysis of the Heights and Bases of the Great Pyramid of Khufu and the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan" in the Nexus Network Journal vol. 1 (1999). He is contributing editor for "The Geometer's Angle" in the Nexus Network Journal. He is presently at work on two books, The Art and Science of Geometric Analysis and A Geometry Primer for Art and Design Students.

Mr. Reynolds lives with his wife and family in Mill Valley, CA, and where he also has a studio.
